Other persuasive techniques used in the advert are:
Each media language technical element used in an advert can be used to be reffered t as a sign tht helps the producer construct meaning.
Semiotics is the study of signs. Each sign has two levels of meanings.
Denotation
The literal meaning of each of the different signs you can see in an advert.
For example: A middle aged white man, in an expesive suit in an office, with the product image of a bottle of aftershave in the bottom right third of the advert.
Denotation is the description of what you see in an advert.
Connotation
The additional meaning or implications of the meanings created by each sign.
For example a successful businessman wears this aftershave, which helps make him powerful. If you buy this aftershave, you too could be like him, be of similar status and own similar things.
Connotation in this sense is an ANALYSIS of what you see in adverts and what combination of signs mean or tell you about the product.

Other persuasive techniques used in the advert are:
- Celebrity endorsement- the model is an American actor and former American football wide receiver
- Humour- humour appeal is used in the context of the exaggerated/ surreal setting, the expression of the face of the actor, the random combination of visuals along with the unfinished claim help create an atmospere of humour.
- Escape- the idea of escape, also referenced in the TV advert with the phrase `The man your man could smell like` provides a sense of escapism for the female audience. The setting of a tropical island provides a sense of escape from everyday life.

Technical conventions: Old Spice
Special effects/ image manipulation- The volcano erupting has been manipulated using CGI techniques onto the top of Mustafa`s head. Other props including the sunbathing women, island windsurfer and the shark have also been edited onto his body in order to relate the advert to the tropical weather and atmosphere.
Location and setting- As the text of/on the advert refers to `Bahamas scent`, the virtul studio and effects have been used to make it appear as if the actor is on a tropical island. This establishes a relationship and link between the text and the visuals. Therefore, the `Bahamas` are represented by the background of the advert, which has been edited to make it appear as if it is the `Bahamas`.
Unfinished statement/claim/comparison- The use of phrases that are not finished so they cannot be fully compared. eg ``probably the best beer in the world` or in this case of the Old spice advert `this fact has not been fact-checked``.
Intertextuality- The unfinished statement is an intertextual reference to the campaign adverts. Mustafa`s position as an actor in `Shadowhunter` and former athlete (American footballer) makes him appealing to male and female audiences.
Media language- codes and conventions
Codes and conventions include- technical, written and symbolic codes
