The relationship between martin Rauch and his girlfriend (Anette)

Individualism- capitalist society
Collectivism- communist society/socialism

You will apply Levi Strauss’ Binary oppositions and describe how narrative is driven forward by expanding on the following themes
- State vs family
- Manipulation vs Love
- Danger vs Safety

In the opening of the episode, there was a representation of women given by the man talking on the TV that Lenira was listening to.

Relationship between General Edel and his daughter
Patriarchy is visibl as the father is trying to be dominant as he states he would like to follow and study classical music rather than allowing her to study the music she actually enjoys.

Lenora
Manipulative and strong lady- like a boss. She is a collectivist as she wants a better position for German people rather than only caring for her sister that needs a liver transplantation.

Binary opposites

State vs family
Martin is forced into helping his country and serving for it rather than staying at home with his family. his aunt forces and manipulated him into this (being a spy).

Safety vs danger
The state of danger is portrayed through the scene where he had to take pictures of the documents inside the suitcase of the General.

Todorov- equilibrium
Equilibrium is portrayed when he comes home from serving his country as a border in the West. He is happy with his family and his girlfriend Anette.

Time 5.25- 5.27

Time 7.05-7.10

Time 7.13- 8.10

The scene where Lenora and her sister which is Martin`s mother are in the kitchen can be seen as a state of an equilibrium because Lenora buys her a present therefore her sister looks happy and they seme to be on good terms. However, this equilibrium will be disrupted later on inthe episode, when Martin is send to the Wet to serve his country and manipulated to do it in order to allow his mother to get on the list for the kidney transplant rather than denying her form this opportunity that the auntie- Lneora will provide them only in exchange of Martin serving his country in the West.

Disequilibrium

Time 10.48-11.05

Here the disequilibrium in other words the diruption of the equilibrium occurs as Martin`s mother finds out that if her son will go to the West to serve the country she will be able to get on the list for the kidney transplant, which therefore causes tension between their relationship with Lenora as she sees that she is manipulative and wants to persuade Martin to do this with the manipulaitve reason which is that in that way he wil help his mother.

This is the scene where the disruption of the disequilibrium becomes clear as it shows the moment when Martin finds out that he must go to the West in order to serve his country, as he is told by his auntie Lenora that in that way he will allow his mother to get on the kidney transplant list.
At this point Martin is seen as an individualist as he only cares about his mother and his girlfriend Anette and how he wants to be with them. However, Tobias and Lenora critise him for being an individualist and force him to be more collectivistic by serving his country in the West. In the opening scene, Martin is portrayed as a collectivist as he works at the East border, and critices the 2 students for being `greedy capitalists` which are individualistic and only care about their own well-being. However, as the disruption of the equilibrium occurs Martin becomes the one criticised for being an individualist as he prefers to stay with his family and therefore does not want to follow his auntie and go to the West.

State vs Family

The binary opposites of state vs family can be seen in the shot inserted above. At this point of the episode, when Martin is at the party organised by the General while everyone is downstairs and outside in the garden listening to the General`s daughter performing a song, Martin uses this moment to go upstairs to the second floor and use the phone in order to call home in order to talk with his girlfriend Anette. However, there are many risks behind doing that as when he came to the West he took a fake identity and nobody knows that his real name is Martin and where he comes from. However, as soon as he calls nette and she answers the sister of the Gneral`s wife sees him and runs back downstairs in order to tell the General and his wife what she has witnessed. This therefore showw, how according to Martin his family- his mother and his girlfriend are more important to him rather than serving his country, showing the binary opposites between state vs family.

Manipulation vs Love
The binary opposites of manipulation and love are also present in the long form telelviison drama. Manipulation can be seen, when Martin`s auntie Lenora is forcing Martin to go to the West to serve his country and therefore using the excuse that if he does that then his mother will be able to go on the waiting list a kidney transplant. This shows that Lenora, is a manipulative character and therefore manipulates Martin into going to the West- to serve the county.
Furthermore, as a binary opposite of manipulation, love can be seen as in terms of the relationship between Martin and Anette. They are 2 very young characters that are in love with each other, however they have been separated due to the manipulation created by Martin`s auntie Lenora, which has manipulated and forced Martin to go to the West. This therefore will result in the separation between the couple as he will be forced to leave the home.

Patriarchy
The ideology of Patriarchy can be seen in the part where everyone is at the General`s house party that he has organised.
When the daughter of the General and Martin are having a conversation, the daughter states that she prefers to play music for the `soul` however her dad wants her to follow and study `classical` music showing how their family relationship consists of a patriarchy as the father- male and dominant figure is most of the time in charge and would tell the female what to do. In this case, her father tells her what she will study in the future, showing that she does not have a choice and will have to do what he has said. Furthermore, as she is younger and a female this furthermore, results in her being submissive.

Safety vs Danger
The theme of safety can be seen when Martin comes home and is with his family such as his mother and girlfriend Anette. The theme of safety can also be seen in the way he feels as he is very well welcomed home, as the day he arrives home was the same day of his mother`s birthday therefore many of his relatives or family friends were around happy that he has returned home for the weekend. As he sees Anette, he looks like he feels that he is in the right place.
However, the theme of danger can be seen when, he wakes up in Berlin in a place that he does not recognise with people that he does not know either such as Tobias. At this moment he is being told the story and the plan of what he is supposed to do after he is sent to the West. After Martin hears the plan and states that he does not want to take part and do what his auntie- Lenora and Tobias told him he tries to run away. As he runs away, this brings tension as we do not know if he is now in trouble.
Furthermore, the theme of danger can also be seen when he has to take photos of all of the documents inside the bag of the General Jackson who is a foreign Jackson. As he unlocks the room and begins taking photos of the documents he can hear that General Edel and General Jackson are approaching therefore, the audience begins thinking that he will get cought which builds up the tension. Another element that helps to build up the tension is also the music used at that point of the episode.
This can be seen as danger as if Martin was cought while taking photos of the documents opf General Jackson or even trying to open the door he would have ended up in a very big trouble.

Todorov- equilibrium
The state of equilibrium can be seen when Martin returns home for the weekend after he has been at the East border serving as a guard. As soon as he arrives home we as the audience see the evidence of Martin feeling safe, good and welcomes by the closest people to him- his mother and his girlfriend Anette, as well as the other familt relatives. This therefore portrays the equilibrium of the story as Martin feels ahppy. However, as the episode and the story develops, in the morning after the birthday party of his mother, there is a surprise awaiting Martin. His auntie Lenora comes to his home with 2 other officials, in order to let Martin know that he must go to serve his country to the West. These news very unexpected for Martin, Anette and his mother. The disruption of the equilibrium takes place here as they all find out that about the bad news that Martin is forced to leave and serve the West border even if he does not want to. Therefore, Martin says no, however his autnoie Lenora tells him that he must do that and as an ultimatum she tells him that only if he does that will his mum go on the waiting list for the kidney transplant that she needs. This also, shows a plot twist as the happy and love story that the audience were originally introduced to when Martin came home and reunited with his girlfriend- Anette, is about to end as he will be send to the West ot serve his country.
The resolution and establishment of a new equilibirum may be seen after Martin has taken the photos and therefore thinks that he has completed his job. However, at the same moment Lenora comes and says to Martin that his job is not fully finished and he is just starting. Therefore, at the first episode the third part of Todorov`s theory is not fully evident yet as there is not yeat a resolution and a re-establishment of the equilibrium.

bell hooks

bell hooks theory is present in the long form television drama as the daughter of General Edel is seen as being subservient and submissive to her father who tells her what to do in her future and therefore she does not have a choice therefore he is dominant over her.

Van Zoonen
One of points of Van Zoonen is that gender is constructed through discource.
The representation of Ivonne, can therefore cause the audience to believe that women are ruled, dominated and submissive to the male, as in this case the General tells her what she is going to dtudy and do in her future, and therefore she does not have a choice. This can therefore, lead to the audience believe and therefore adopt this representation as shaping their idea of what a specific gender is like, in this case what it is like to be a `women`.

Deutschland 83- Hybrid
The Long form television drama can be seen as having elements of commidity and humour
1. In the beginning at the border crossing
2. When Martin and the other man are taking the General`s wife`s sister home.
