This video compared to Burn the witch establishes a close relationship with today`s society and the way it operates. This can be seen through the use of drug addictions, ethnic diversity being portrayed, working class people.
Edit
- filters/over glaze/grainy film/faded film to portray the realism- bethnal green
- lots of cuts, clips change fast and constantly to suggest that the life of the working class people and celebrities can be hard and stressful.
- Realism can be seen through the contemporary society issues being visible in the video. For example, the dull locations where the young people are shot taking/doing drugs, as well as the natural portrayal of the place- Bethnal Green where the video is shot. For example, the place is portryad in its natural way, dirty roads, we as the audience can see that the roads haven`t been closed in order to use them to shoot, they haven`t been cleaned up before shooting.

Ideology
Capitalism/poverty- can be potrayed by the shot of the homeless people and the majority of the characters of the music video who come from a working class background. The video can relate to the ideology of capitalism as Emile Sande is trying to get across the message that everybody deserves to be in a good position and that power and money should be equally distributed across the variety of people. Also, after the video is released Sande will make profit from it therefore she benefits from capitalism however, the characters who participated in the video- the homeless people, will not benefit in any way.
Individualism- this can be also seen as an ideology of this music video as in the video we can see the portrayal of mainly working class people therefore this suggests that people in today`s contemporary society are so individualistic- concerned about their own welfare and well-being that they are not concerned with helping that may be at an disadvantage. This can also be seen of the number of shots which show homeless people who have clearly been rejected from the society.
Ethnicity- this is a very clear ideology as the area- Bethnal Green where the video is shot is in London which is a multicultural city with a very high number of immigrants from ethnic minority backgrounds therefore trhe ethnic diversity is clearly portrayed. For example, there a few shots of people who look like they come from an african-caarribean background or there were a few shots of people coming from a black race.
Hedonism- living and behaving in ways that mean you get as much pleasure out of life as possible, according to the belief that the most important thing in life is to enjoy yourself. In the opening shot of the video we can see that there is young girl walking into a dark shadow with a short, mini red dress which connotes that she may be a prostitute due to her financial situation therefore she has chosen to do this in order to get some income from it. However, it can also symbolise the ideology of hedonism as she may also be doing it for the pursuit of self pleasure.
Feminism- the belief that women should be allowed the same rights, power, and opportunities as men and be treated in the same way, or the set of activities intended to achieve this state. A political movement that fights for women`s right and equality.
Consumerism-the protection or promotion of the interests of consumers. An industrialised society where consuming goods is the most important characteristic. People are being judged on the things they consume and the things they own. this ideology is very visible in the music video as, today's society is constructed all around consumerism however the by having the homeless and working class characters portrayed in the video this connotes that consumerism should not be so important and therefore what we wear, buy or own should not define who we are. However, the consumerist society can be seen through the representation of Emile Sande in the video herself, as she is wearing jewellery and her clothing looks quite expensive, comparing her to the working class people who are dressed in old, broke and dirty clothes and laying on the streets.
Social exclusion- exclusion from the prevailing social system and its rights and privileges, typically as a result of poverty or the fact of belonging to a minority social group. The deprived people involved in the music video are excluded and this can be seen as most of them are homeless therefore if they were received any benefits then they would not b sin the position they are in right therefore, suggesting that they are socially excluded from the society and from the system therefore they do not received any help from the system/country either and remain in the same position that they are already in.
Isolationism- a policy of remaining apart from the affairs or interests of other groups, especially the political affairs of other countries. In the music video we can clearly see as an audience how all the working class or homeless people are isolated from the rest of the society. In addition, there is the portrayal of people who seem to have addictions such as drugs and therefore the close shots of them imply their loneliness as a result of being excluded.
1. What is the main message of Emile Sande?
2. How may a viewer of the following groups respond to the video or the preferred meaning?
a) From a homeless man perspective
b) From a young girl perspective
c) From a businessman or women perspective
1. The main message of Emile Sande towards the audience is that the power and the money should be equally distributed to the population and classes. She focuses the attention of the audience on the deprived, working class or homeless people to portray that they are the people in need of help most. She also focuses on the positivity and encourages people to be more optimistic of the situations they are in by trying to say that there is always hope for a better future and this can be seen through the use of bright lighting which symbolises the positivity and hope.
Another message that Sande tries to convey through the music video is the contemporary issues of the society we live in, in order to emphasise how serious they are and by conducting many shots of the young generations such as young people, even kids she is implying that us the younger generations are responsible for solving those issues and creating a better future
2a) A homeless man is most likely going to support the message of Emile Sande of how the poor and working class people are in need of help and support to be lifted away from the situation and life they are stacked in currently. He will sympathise with the working class, deprived, poor and homeless people shown in the video as he is a homeless man himself and therefore there is a close relationship established. This can relate to the uses and gratifications theory of Katz and Blumler or personal identity as he will see many of his personal characteristics in the people shown in the video.
2b) A girl will also be supportive of Sande's music video idea as she is from the young generation therefore she will understand that the lives of the poor people shown in the video can be improved by her help. However, on the other hand if the girl is too young she may not actually understand the message of Emile Sande therefore she will not take this seriously and may not be concerned with the issues that are going on in the world, as she may be too young. Also, if the young girl is raised in an individualistic society she will most likely end up only being concerned with her own well-being and will not show any interest in helping other people.
2c) A businessman/businesswomen may be very ignorant to the video and his meaning as they are already in a good position in life therefore as they may be very materialistic they may see no financial or or no gain at all of helping people.

Lyrics
Will you recognize me
In those flashing lights?
I try to keep my heart beat
But I can't get it right
In those flashing lights?
I try to keep my heart beat
But I can't get it right
Will you recognize me
When I'm lying on my back?
Somethings gone inside me
And I can't get it back
When I'm lying on my back?
Somethings gone inside me
And I can't get it back
Oh heaven, oh heaven
I wake with good intentions
But the day, it always lasts too long
Then I'm gone
Oh heaven, oh heaven
I wake with good intentions
But the day, it always lasts too long
I wake with good intentions
But the day, it always lasts too long
Then I'm gone
Oh heaven, oh heaven
I wake with good intentions
But the day, it always lasts too long
Then I'm gone
Then I'm gone
Then I'm gone
Then I'm gone
Then I'm gone
Then I'm gone
Then I'm gone
Then I'm gone
Then I'm gone
Then I'm gone
Then I'm gone
Then I'm gone
Then I'm gone
Then I'm gone
Will you recognize me
When I'm stealing from the poor- It could be relating to the fact that fater releasing this song and the video, Emile Sande will be benefitting financially however the working class and homeless people form the video, their situation will remain the same and they will not benefit in any way, nor in a financial way.
You're not gonna like me
I'm nothing like before
